How Many Security Cameras Does My Business Need?

Summit DNC EngineeringOctober 14, 20259 min read

Determining the right number of security cameras is a balance between comprehensive coverage and budget. Too few cameras leave blind spots; too many waste money on overlapping views.

Coverage Goals Drive Camera Count:

Level 1 — Deterrence (minimum coverage):

Visible cameras at entry/exit points to deter opportunistic crime. - Cameras needed: 1 per exterior door + 1 per parking lot area - Typical small office: 4-6 cameras

Level 2 — Incident Investigation (standard coverage):

Enough cameras to track a person through the facility and identify them. - Cameras needed: Level 1 + hallway cameras + register/POS cameras + loading docks - Typical mid-size business: 8-16 cameras

Level 3 — Comprehensive (full coverage):

Every area covered with forensic-quality video. - Cameras needed: Level 2 + individual office/room cameras + stairwells + storage areas - Typical large facility: 24-64+ cameras

Camera Count by Facility Type:

| Facility Type | Sq. Footage | Recommended Cameras | Camera/Sq Ft Ratio | |--------------|-------------|--------------------|--------------------| | Small retail store | 1,000-3,000 | 4-8 | 1 per 375-500 sq ft | | Restaurant | 2,000-5,000 | 6-12 | 1 per 333-417 sq ft | | Medical office | 3,000-8,000 | 8-16 | 1 per 375-500 sq ft | | Office building floor | 10,000-20,000 | 12-24 | 1 per 833-1,000 sq ft | | Warehouse | 20,000-100,000 | 16-48 | 1 per 1,250-2,000 sq ft | | Retail center | 50,000+ | 48-128+ | 1 per 1,000 sq ft |

Critical Coverage Areas (Never Skip):

1. **Every exterior entrance/exit** — Single most important camera placement. Use cameras with at least 4MP for face identification at 15-20 feet.

2. **Cash handling areas** — POS registers, safes, cash counting rooms. Position cameras to see both the employee and the transaction.

3. **Parking lots** — Cover vehicle entry/exit with wide-angle or panoramic cameras. Use LPR cameras at gated entries if vehicle identification is needed.

4. **Loading docks and receiving** — High-theft area. Cameras should cover dock doors, staging areas, and truck approaches.

5. **Server/data rooms** — Compliance requirement for HIPAA, PCI, and SOC 2. Camera should capture who enters and what they access.

6. **Stairwells and elevators** — Safety requirement. Vandal-resistant dome cameras with wide-angle lenses.

Camera Selection by Location:

| Location | Camera Type | Minimum Resolution | Lens | |----------|-----------|-------------------|------| | Front door | Fixed dome | 4MP | 2.8-4mm | | Parking lot | Bullet with IR | 4MP | 4-8mm | | Wide hallway | Panoramic | 8-12MP | Multi-sensor | | Cash register | Fixed mini-dome | 2MP | 2.8mm | | Loading dock | Bullet with IR | 4MP | 4mm | | Warehouse aisle | Bullet | 4MP | 2.8-4mm | | Building perimeter | Bullet with long IR | 4-8MP | 6-12mm | | License plate | LPR camera | 2MP+ | 8-12mm |

Calculating Storage:

Each camera generates: - 2MP @ 15fps: ~7GB/day - 4MP @ 15fps: ~14GB/day - 4K @ 15fps: ~28GB/day

Example: 24 cameras, 4MP, 30-day retention

24 cameras x 14GB/day x 30 days = 10,080GB (10TB) Add 20% overhead = 12TB NVR storage needed

Professional Site Survey:

Every facility is different. A professional site survey identifies camera positions, lens requirements, cable run distances, and optimal NVR placement based on your specific floor plan and coverage goals.

Summit DNC provides free security camera site surveys for commercial properties across Southern California. We design systems using Axis, Verkada, and Hikvision cameras. Contact us to schedule a survey.
